The 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander VS The 2023 Mazda CX-5

If you are in the market for a compact SUV that is stylish and fun to drive, chances are that you are considering the 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander and the 2023 Mazda CX-5. Both models have very similar engines and fuel economy, making them close competitors. Continue reading as we explore both vehicles and discover why we think the Mitsubishi Outlander comes out on top.

Design

With their bold and sophisticated designs, both the CX-5 and the Outlander’s exterior designs command attention. Step inside, however, and one of the first things you will notice is how much roomier the Outlander is. The Outlander offers more leg and headroom for both the front and rear passengers, as well as a 50/50 split-folding third row, making it one of the smallest vehicles on the market with third-row seating.

Performance

Both models offer similar 2.5-litre Inline four-cylinder engines. Mazda mates its engine to a six-speed automatic transmission that offers sport and off-roading modes, where Mitsubishi opted to equip the Outlander with a CVT transmission, providing a smoother ride and featuring six available modes; eco, normal, snow, gravel, tarmac, and mud.

In terms of optional engines, the Mazda CX-5 offers a powerful 2.5-litre turbocharged engine on the Sport trim. Mitsubishi offers an optional 2.4-litre plug-in hybrid engine that can give up to 428 horsepower. Mitsubishi also offers an All-Wheel Drive option.

Warranty

While both models offer similar specs and features, there is no denying that Mitsubishi offers a better warranty. While Mazda Canada offers unlimited mileage with its new vehicle warranty, coverage ends after 36 months of ownership. Whereas Mitsubishi Canada’s new vehicle warranty covers your vehicle against defects in materials and/or workmanship for 5 years or 100,000 kilometres, whichever comes first. Mitsubishi also doubles the powertrain warranty, offering a 10-year/ 160,000-kilometre powertrain warranty to Mazda’s five years of coverage.
